old man elephant,
can you feel even my heels?
you may rub those trees,
but won't swat me off.
i'd never urge you to jump.
let's just stumble from the stampede.
old saggy ears,
are you worn out by whispers?
would you perk
if i fell asleep, fell away?
i can feel you think:
pick some insects off, at least.
old skeleton elephant,
which of us turns toward the graveyard?
all we can know is
big and small bones pile up together.
